FIPS 140-2 is a U.S. government computer security standard used to validate cryptographic modules for use in government departments and regulated industries such as financial and health care institutions. All module tests are handled by third-party laboratories that are accredited as Cryptographic and Security Testing laboratories; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) maintains a list of all vendors who have validated modules.
Using other companies FIPS 140-2 validated modules without validating the entire product does not comply with FISMA requirements utilizing FIPS 140-2 validated modules. All validated modules are listed on NIST’s Web site. If the module is not listed there, it is not FIPS validated.
